FTCT Rainbow Run Field Trip
|

|
On 25 September 2005, eight FTCT members and invited guests canoed and snorkeled on Rainbow Run (Dunnellon, Florida). The weather was beautiful and we captured (and released) about 50 turtles representing five species. Loggerhead musk turtles (Sternotherus minor) and Suwannee cooters (Pseudemys concinna suwanniensis) were both abundant. We also observed a couple specimens each of both the peninsula cooter (Pseudemys floridana peninsularis) and Florida redbelly turtle (Pseudemys nelsoni). A single striped mud turtle (Kinosternon baurii) was also observed. Seeing 20% of the state’s turtle diversity in one day was a real thrill! Other highlights included a juvenile brown water snake (Nerodia taxispilota) and some huge hornworms. A great day was had by all that attended. Members are encouraged to attend future field trips and join turtle researchers and conservationists in exploring Florida’s turtle hotspots. Information on upcoming field trips will be posted on the calendar page of this website. Check back frequently so that you do not miss out! Click on image to see larger view and descriptions. |
